Today I went to go see the Cervical Cancer specialist, Dr. Kelly, and finally got some good news. Not good news as in, you don’t have cancer you have a cold, but good news as in the cancer hasn’t spread too far. Let’s just start ot the beginning and go from there. My husband and I showed up at the doctor’s office, filled out the 100 sheets of paper work and commenced the long wait until my name was called. When they called my name they showed us into a room and the nurse told me that the doctor was going to take a quick look at my cervix and to go ahead and strip from the waist down. My husband did NOT want to be in the room for this so he went back out to the lobby until this part was over. It’s silly but he doesn’t want to be there just because there is a stranger whos hand will be up his wife’s hoo-hoo. lolol It is weird if you think about it like that! I try to just think about the fact that this stranger is going to make me better. He’s got his hand up my hoo-hoo to find the bad things so he can make them go away. He just took a quick look so it wasn’t really that bad. The bad part is what happened next. He told me that he was going to do a RECTAL EXAM on me and before I could get the word NOOOOOO out of my mouth I got a finger in my hoo-hoo and a thumb up my butt. I think I will be mentally scarred for life because of that. It was traumatic!!!!
Finally it was the Q&A part of the appointment. I had a notebook full of questions Chris and I wrote down in the past few days so we were prepared for him. Dr. Kelly told me that the MRI I had Friday afternoon showed him everything he wanted to know. The type of Cervical Cancer I have is called Squamous Cell Cervical Carcinoma. The clinical stage that it is at is 1B1, which is a good thing. This means that the cancer hasn’t been there long so it hasn’t had enough time to spread out. It is only 3cm deep and it is only infecting my cervix and part of my uterus. THANK GOD! So, the next step is surgery. I will have to have a Radical Hysterectomy and a Radical Trachelectomy (removal of the cervix). Basically, this means that he will take out my cervix, uterus, part of the vagina, and all the lymph-nodes in the surrounding area, but leave my ovaries intact. If the removed lymph-nodes show no sign of cancer then that’s it! I’m done! The cancer has had it’s ass kicked! If there are signs of cancer in the removed lymph-nodes then I will have to have Radiation treatments as well as chemotherapy. THAT would kill any remaining cancer cells and hopefully not damage too many of my healthy cells in the process.
I will spend 2 days in the hospital, take 6 weeks to recover, and then be healthy as a horse! Hopefully anyways. =] The one thing that has kept me sane and helped me stay calm is my husband. Without him I would be a basket case and would never leave my room. Since the MOMENT I told him that I have cancer he hasn’t left my side. I will always be grateful for that. He is so wonderful to me and so supportive and I would NOT have been able to even make it this far without him. I love you baby!
Well, that’s the news so far! Tomorrow Dr. Kelly is supposed to call me and let me know when my surgery will take place and I can’t wait. I would be so happy if it would be for Wednesday. Crap, i’d go right now! I mean, no cancer and no more period! WOO HOO!! Well, as soon as I know something i’ll let ya know! Until then, i’ll go take me another pain pill. *drool*
Aeryn, I am so happy for you and Chris. I believe you are going to lick this thing in a heartbeat!!!! Thank God. We will keep praying for clean lymph nodes!!!! Hooray! Can’t wait for you to tell me you are feeling wonderful. It will be soon.
